Demeo10/4/2023 Every encounter offers a challenge which makes every session fulfilling. The relief of a clear room and the panic of finding one rammed with enemies is almost tangible. You are never truly safe as you can never be certain exactly what is around that corner or beyond that door. While it is always fun, it is impressive just how much tension and suspense Demeo manages to create. It is such a big part of modern tabletop dungeon games it does feel like a gap in Demeo. Each class has a pre-created mini for the virtual game board, and have their own fantastic voice overs too, but it would have been amazing to pick a class, design my mini, choose a voice, then see them on the tabletop. It should be noted that there is no character creator, currently, which I felt was a significant missed opportunity. There’s a wonderful art to making decks which maximise your character’s potential which is very rewarding when it goes right. The end of encounter merchant means you can craft your deck to work with your playstyle for the class you are playing as. Opening a chest can absolutely make an encounter, turning the tides with that one ability you really needed. These cards can be replenished by finding chests on the dungeon floors or by purchasing them at then end of a dungeon level using your looted gold. Unless they end up hurting you in which case…not so funny. While it can be frustrating when this happens playing solo, it is always hilarious when it happens to somebody else during multiplayer. Roll the lowest possible and you’ll fail potentially harming those you didn’t intend to. Roll the maximum and you will double your damage or trigger another bonus effect. On top of this, actions are subject to the roll of virtual dice. In this way, each map becomes a strategic battle of when to use your power plays and when to hold back. Others, the more powerful cards, are removed from your hand once used. Some, like basic attacks and actions, can be used each turn. There really is a dragon hoard of content in Demeo with more characters and lore coming too.Ĭombat is handled by each character class having their own deck of cards to use. In fact, two more are scheduled for 2022 releases. More adventure modules will be coming in the future too which means you can look forward to more finely crafted sessions. It still looks great and does a brilliant job of emulating a top-tier tabletop setup without going way over-the-top. There are plenty of these sort of little graphical flourishes throughout Demeo, even if the game itself isn’t the best looking title in the world. From a design standpoint, these adventures are beautifully made to look like old-school Dungeon-Master books which I loved. The game currently has three adventure modules you can play through which function as an overarching story to drive you through, and down, the dungeon levels. Those board games are amazing fun and Demeo knows exactly how to make your adventures fun and rewarding. There isn’t really any roleplaying to speak of but this is not a criticism. Instead, it plays more like the Dungeons and Dragons board games with a focus on dungeon exploration and combat. What Demeo is not is a full TTRPG experience.
